Tennessee culinary student faces long recovery after assisting driver on highway

Serenity Sumler, a 20-year-old culinary school student, spent 31 days at Vanderbilt hospital after being hit by a car on Interstate 24 in Antioch. News Channel 5 Nashville reported that Sumler was driving home when she stopped to help the driver of a single-car crash. [1]

While standing on the passenger side of the vehicle talking to the driver and calling 911, an SUV spun out, struck a guardrail, and hit her. According to crash investigators cited by News Channel 5 Nashville, Sumler was pinned between the two vehicles before falling to the ground. [1]

Sumler stated that she decided to pull over to assist because of how she was raised, noting that it would not have sat well with her to leave a person in distress. She is currently facing a long physical recovery without health insurance after her release from the hospital. [1]

As HEROIC BREAKING NEWS reported earlier, individuals who step in to protect or help strangers often face unexpected physical injuries and personal financial costs, such as Ruth Forbes in Herefordshire who sustained a severe knee injury while protecting a teenager in traffic. [10]
