P Mahendiran has rescued over 1,000 destitute individuals from the streets of Coimbatore, according to The Times of India. He operates through an initiative named Eera Nenjam to provide help and shelter to people in need across the city. [1]

Mahendiran was inspired to begin his work after an incident in 1992, when he was 16 years old. The Times of India reported that his elder sister fell into a roadside sewage drain while walking to a temple, and an anonymous autorickshaw driver stepped in to save her after bystanders kept their distance. [1]

The act of empathy motivated Mahendiran to begin aiding vulnerable people on the streets of Coimbatore in 2005. By 2009, the Gandhipuram resident had single-handedly rescued 16 people and placed them in care facilities, according to The Times of India. [1]

Extreme poverty involves a severe deprivation of basic human needs such as food, shelter, health, and safe drinking water, according to United Nations definitions. Mahendiran's ongoing efforts focus on assisting those who are abandoned without access to these essential services. [1][3]
