Three young volunteer surf lifesavers rescued a kayaker whose vessel was sinking off the Bay of Plenty coast on Thursday, SunLive reported. Police contacted Surf Life Saving New Zealand at around 3:00 p.m. after a witness spotted the kayaker in distress off Pukehina, which lies east of Tauranga. [1]
According to SunLive, the Western Bay of Plenty search and rescue squad was activated following the alert. The emergency response brought together volunteers affiliated with surf lifesaving clubs in Mount Maunganui, Ōmanu, Pāpāmoa, and Pukehina. [1]
Pukehina lifeguard Zoe Rive and Mount Maunganui club member Jamie Cabusao launched an inflatable rescue boat to reach the distressed mariner, SunLive reported. They safely transported the kayaker back to shore alongside team member Tai Rimmer. [1]
The incident highlights the risks of vessel instability in open waters. Boat capsizing or keeling over occurs when a vessel is rolled by wave action, wind force, or flooding beyond its stability limits. [2]
The successful mission adds to recent water rescues involving prompt emergency coordination. As HEROIC BREAKING NEWS reported earlier, volunteer responders and coast guard crews previously brought four mariners to safety without injury after their boat took on water off Key Largo. [3]
