Inspectors have praised Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service for its response to a damaged ship carrying potentially explosive cargo that docked in Great Yarmouth in 2024. The BBC reported that His Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services found the service responded well when the MV Ruby docked in Norfolk after being turned away from other countries. [1]

The watchdogs rated the fire service as good overall after evaluating its handling of the vessel, which carried a large consignment of ammonium nitrate fertilizer. According to the BBC, the fire service chief confirmed that preparing for major emergency incidents will remain a primary focus for the department. [1]

The inspection report noted progress across the department, finding that Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service had improved in 16 problem areas since its previous review in 2023. The watchdog noted, however, that overall preparedness for major incidents still required improvement. [1]
