Firefighters rescue base jumper suspended 23 floors above Auckland CBD

Firefighters rescued a base jumper who became suspended 23 floors above ground in central Auckland late on Tuesday night, the NZ Herald reported. Emergency services arrived to find a parachute hanging approximately 80 metres above the street level. [1]

Fire and Emergency senior station officer Darren Gussey described the response to the scene as a semi-unusual event, according to the NZ Herald. The 22-year-old man told responding police officers and emergency personnel that he did not have much left in him while trapped in the elevated position. [1]

The jumper, a Belgian national, claimed responsibility for two base jumps performed from central Auckland buildings in September and October, the NZ Herald reported. Authorities charged the man with burglary, and he is scheduled to appear in court on October 27. [1]
