The United States Navy will send the hospital ship USNS Comfort to the northern coast of Peru in February 2027, according to the Latin Times. The vessel is scheduled to arrive as projected El Nino weather patterns reach their peak. [1]

The Latin Times reported that the deployment aims to assist local populations facing severe weather risks. Peru's disaster risk agency CENEPRED warns that nearly eight million people across the country face a very high risk of flooding. [1]

On October 19, United States State Department official Ryan Shrum met with Peruvian Foreign Minister Carlos Espa and Ambassador Bernie Navarro in Lima, the Latin Times said. The officials coordinated a bilateral strategy involving logistics, infrastructure, and telecommunications. [1]

The USNS Comfort carries 1,000 beds, operating rooms, CT units, and a blood bank, the Latin Times reported. Hospital ships serve as floating medical treatment facilities, and most are operated by military forces. [1][2]
