An emergency shelter was established at San Juan High School in Blanding, Utah, following mandatory evacuations across the Four Corners region, KJZZ reported. Heavy rainfall caused the San Juan River to crest at nearly century-high levels, flooding local roadways and driving families from their homes. KJZZ added that the evacuations were ordered for residents in Bluff, Montezuma Creek, and Aneth. [1]

Additional reporting by azcentral.com and The Arizona Republic noted that flooding in the Four Corners area forced the closure of the US 160 bridge alongside local evacuations. Kiowa County Press reported that thousands of homes were impacted in New Mexico, while a dozen counties in Colorado were placed under state emergency declarations as rivers reached record levels. [4][6]

Emergency shelters provide temporary residence for individuals who cannot remain in their homes due to natural or man-made disasters. Unlike traditional homeless shelters, emergency shelters often allow residents to remain on site throughout the day and frequently provide meals and organized support groups. [7]

The Four Corners region is an arid area located on the Colorado Plateau, defined by the geographic intersection of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah. Large portions of the rural region belong to semi-autonomous Native American nations, including the Navajo Nation, Ute, Hopi, and Zuni tribal reserves. [8][9]

According to KJZZ, weather forecasters have warned that potentially catastrophic flooding along the San Juan River could occur. Flood warnings in the affected communities are expected to remain in effect through Tuesday morning. [1]
