Firefighter Paul Gardiner received the Water Safety Ireland National Lifesaving Bravery Award during a ceremony at the Mansion House in Dublin, the Carlow Nationalist reported. Minister of State Jerry Buttimer presented the award to Mr Gardiner, who works as a driver and mechanic at Bagenalstown Fire Station. [1]
The recognition follows a rescue operation that occurred at around 1:00 am on February 20, 2026. The Carlow Nationalist reported that emergency crews at Bagenalstown Fire Station were dispatched following reports of a person in distress in the River Barrow. At the time of the rescue, heavy rainfall and flooding had caused river water levels to rise significantly, creating fast-flowing currents. [1]
County Carlow is located in the Southern Region of Ireland within the province of Leinster, according to Wikipedia. It is the second smallest and third least populous of the 32 traditional counties in Ireland, with local administration managed by the Carlow County Council. [2]
