Tyne Tunnel operators TT2 halted traffic in both directions on Saturday afternoon after a Ford Fiesta caught fire inside the southbound tunnel. Chronicle Live reported that the vehicle stopped at 4.33pm and was quickly engulfed in flames within three minutes. [1]

Seconds after the fire began, TT2 activated an advanced water mist fire suppression system. According to Chronicle Live, this was the first time the automated equipment had been used in a live emergency incident to suppress a blaze. [1]

The Tyne Tunnel consists of two toll tunnels carrying the A19 road under the River Tyne in North East England, connecting Jarrow with North Shields and Wallsend. The original tunnel opened in 1967, and a second southbound tunnel opened in February 2011 as part of a 262 million pound project. [3][4]

Chronicle Live reported that the incident caused long traffic delays for drivers traveling on the A19 on Saturday afternoon while emergency procedures were carried out. [1]
