A European energy developer has switched on a major biomethane plant in Grottole, southern Italy, that uses regional agricultural byproducts to generate low-carbon gas and fertilizer. The Good News Network reported that the facility will generate energy for more than 3,000 homes while cutting approximately 9,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions every year. [1]

The plant is located in the instep region of the Italian Peninsula. According to the Good News Network, the facility will produce 45 gigawatt-hours of renewable energy annually for decades, helping to replace traditional fossil fuel consumption with local organic materials. [1]

Italy relies heavily on natural gas, which accounts for 46 percent of the nation electricity generation. That amount is three times higher than hydropower, which serves as the second largest contributor to the electricity grid in the country. [1]

Methane is an organic hydrocarbon compound that acts as the main constituent of natural gas. Transitioning energy systems away from non-renewable fossil fuels toward clean resources helps mitigate environmental pollution and addresses climate concerns globally. [2][3]
