Growing wine grapes beneath elevated solar panels significantly boosted crop development and fruit production in southern Italy while simultaneously generating clean electricity, Good News Network reported. Researchers from the University of Bari tested the dual-use agricultural approach on a vineyard located in the Puglia region. [1]

The practice of using the same tract of land for both agriculture and solar energy production is known as agrivoltaics. Good News Network noted that while agrivoltaics is well studied in other agricultural settings, its specific effects on the delicate science of viticulture had previously remained unexamined. [1][4]

The study was conducted specifically to address environmental challenges in Puglia, where grapevines are routinely exposed to intense sunlight and severe heat. Placing solar panels over the vines helped shield the crops while maximizing land utility. [1]
