Geothermal startup Fervo Energy has started selling electricity to the grid from its Cape Station facility in Utah, IEEE Spectrum reported. The outlet noted that this marks the first time a utility-scale, next-generation geothermal plant has achieved commercial operation worldwide. [1]

The Houston-based company turned on an initial 33-megawatt unit late last week and conducted testing to ramp up output, IEEE Spectrum reported. Fervo Energy will officially begin commercial operations on Thursday, delivering carbon-free electricity to Shell Energy, a retail power provider operating in California. [1]

Enhanced geothermal systems generate electricity without requiring natural convective hydrothermal resources. Traditional geothermal power requires naturally occurring heat, water, and rock permeability, but enhanced techniques use stimulation methods like hydraulic stimulation to extract energy from dry and impermeable rock. [2]

The Cape Station project represents a $2 billion investment that is planned to eventually reach a total capacity of 500 megawatts, IEEE Spectrum reported. [1]
