First responders rescue driver from sinking vehicle in Connecticut River

First responders rescued a 69-year-old woman from a sinking vehicle after she drove into the Connecticut River on November 4, 2026. WCAX reported that the incident occurred just after noon along Lancaster Road in Lunenburg, Vermont. [1]

Authorities identified the driver as Diane Gunnip. According to WCAX, a 911 caller notified the Essex County Sheriff's Office after Gunnip's vehicle veered off the road, traveled through a field, and entered the water. Rescuers helped Gunnip onto the roof of her sinking car before bringing her safely to shore. [1]

The Connecticut River is the longest river in the New England region, flowing southward for 406 miles through four states. WCAX reported that Gunnip suffered a medical event behind the wheel prior to the crash. She was transported to Weeks Hospital in Lancaster for medical treatment. [1][3]
