A kayaker and her small dog, named Gizmo, were rescued after their boat overturned on the Clackamas River in Oregon on October 16. The Cool Down reported that the pair entered the river near Milo McIver State Park, located roughly 30 miles southeast of Portland. The incident occurred within sight of the launch ramp. [1]
The overturned kayak filled with water, which left the owner unable to reach safety on her own while standing in the river with her dog. Matt Aalto, the division chief for the Estacada Fire District who supervised the rescue operation, stated that the woman had struggled to maneuver the flooded vessel. [1]
The dog was wearing a personal flotation device, a precaution that helped ensure his safety during the emergency. Neither the kayaker nor Gizmo was injured in the incident, and the woman required no medical treatment following the rescue. [1]
Whitewater kayaking requires specialized essential equipment, including a whitewater kayak, paddle, helmet, spray skirt, and a personal flotation device to navigate river environments safely. [2]
