The national conservation authority NatureScot granted a license on October 30 to reintroduce beavers to the area around Loch Ness. Good News Network reported that the nonprofits Trees for Life and the Beaver Trust received permission to release up to 15 beaver families into the local environment. [1]

Beavers were last recorded around Scotland's most famous lake between 1526 and 1527. Exactly 500 years later, the species is returning to fulfill its role as key ecosystem engineers. The animals possess sharp teeth capable of cutting down fully-grown trees. [1]

Loch Ness is a large freshwater loch situated in the Scottish Highlands. It is named after the River Ness, which flows from its northern end, and is widely known for claimed sightings of the mythical Loch Ness Monster. [3]

The planned releases will place the animals across the local landscape to help restore natural ecosystem processes. Conservationists hope the presence of these active rodents will reshape waterways and improve biodiversity around the loch. [1]
