Seafarers Hospital Society releases medical emergency guidelines for shipping fleets

The Seafarers Hospital Society has launched new performance standards to assist shipping companies in managing onboard medical emergencies effectively.

The Seafarers Hospital Society announced a new set of Key Performance Indicators on 2 November 2026 to enhance medical emergency response at sea, safety4sea reported. The indicators are designed to help shipping companies evaluate and improve their emergency preparedness, response actions, and recovery protocols during serious illness or injury onboard vessels. [1]

According to safety4sea, the project expands on the charity's broader Best Practice KPI initiative. The new emergency metrics focus on the unique challenges faced when responding to critical medical events far from land. [1]

The framework was created following a collaborative workshop held in June 2026, safety4sea reported. The Seafarers Hospital Society convened the meeting alongside medical experts from the International Maritime Health Association and the International Maritime Health Foundation. [1]

The Seafarers Hospital Society was established in 1821 to support current and former workers in the British Merchant Navy and fishing fleets, as well as their families. [2]
