Families living on Cikobia and Naqelelevu islands in Fiji's Northern Division have received emergency water supplies as the country copes with ongoing El Niño weather conditions, Fijivillage reported. Approximately 55,200 litres of water were delivered directly to Naqelelevu Island through government emergency carting operations using the vessel MLC Vatulawa. [1]
The National Disaster Risk Management Office confirmed that the MLC Vatulawa resumed emergency transport operations after refuelling at Malau Port, according to Fijivillage. Crew members finished delivering water supplies to remaining target villages before sailing on to complete the drop to Naqelelevu, where workers successfully pumped the liquid directly ashore. [1]
The delivery builds on broader relief efforts across the region. As HEROIC BREAKING NEWS reported earlier, the Fijian government has coordinated multiple maritime water shipments to remote communities, including earlier deployments of the MLC Vatulawa to Cikobia alongside separate missions to the Yasawa Group using the MLC Vunilagi. [5]
Cikobia-i-Ra is the northernmost island in Fiji's Macuata Province. Residents on the island face long-term climate vulnerabilities, which led local women to establish the Cikobia Island Development Committee to fund community sustainability initiatives. Disaster authorities continue to advise residents to carefully conserve all distributed water. [3][5]
