Fiji has deployed emergency water supplies to assist communities experiencing shortages in the Yasawa Group and Cikobia. The Fiji Sun and Fijivillage both reported that the Fiji Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management confirmed the continuation of these relief operations. The deliveries are coordinated through the National Disaster Risk Management Office. [1][2]
Authorities are using two specialized vessels to transport the essential supplies. The Fiji Sun reported that the MLC Vunilagi is transporting water to affected communities in the Yasawa Group within the Western Division. In the Northern Division, the MLC Vatulawa is delivering emergency water to Cikobia. Officials have urged local residents to conserve water and use existing supplies carefully while relief shipments continue. [1]
The Yasawa Group consists of an archipelago of roughly 20 volcanic islands located in the Western Division of Fiji, with a total area of about 135 square kilometres. Cikobia-i-Ra is the northernmost island in the Macuata Province of Fiji, featuring a primarily limestone geology. Local women on Cikobia have established the Cikobia Island Development Committee to support businesses that contribute funds to sustainability projects. [3][5]
As HEROIC BREAKING NEWS reported earlier, Fijian authorities previously carried out an emergency water shipment to 427 residents across three villages on Viwa Island following extended dry conditions linked to El Niño. [7]
