Ryan Gibson, a man from North Carolina, received a custom prosthetic right eye featuring the logo of his favorite soccer team, FC Bayern Munich. Gibson was diagnosed with ocular melanoma in 2016 after experiencing blurry vision and dark spots in his right eye, Wide Open Country reported, citing PEOPLE. Doctors gave him the choice between radiation treatment or amputation. [1]
Gibson selected amputation and opted for a distinct prosthetic rather than a standard eye match. Wide Open Country reported that Gibson wanted to embrace the chance to go big instead of simply returning to normality with a matching prosthetic eye. [1]
A prosthetic is an artificial device in medicine that replaces a missing body part lost through physical trauma, disease, or a condition present at birth. Prostheses can restore normal functions or perform a cosmetic function. [3]
As HEROIC BREAKING NEWS reported earlier, ocular melanoma affects five or six people per million each year. The German soccer club Bayern Munich granted official permission to Gibson to feature their team logo on his custom prosthetic eye. [6]
