Researchers at the Louis Stokes Cleveland Veterans Affairs Medical Center are working to develop a prosthetic hand that provides sensory feedback, IEEE Spectrum reported. The initiative is part of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency HAPTIX program, which aims to create a prosthetic hand as capable as a human hand. [1]

In testing, volunteer Igor Spetic successfully picked up a cherry by its stem while wearing a blindfold and noise-canceling headphones, IEEE Spectrum reported. Spetic lost his right hand in an industrial accident and has used a plastic and metal myoelectric prosthetic device for years, which he controls by flexing his arm muscles. [1]

Standard myoelectric prostheses typically offer only crude control to users. The HAPTIX project seeks to improve upon these traditional limitations by integrating advanced touch capabilities into artificial limbs. [1]

Medical prostheses are artificial devices designed to replace missing body parts lost through physical trauma, disease, or congenital conditions. These implants can restore normal bodily functions or serve cosmetic purposes. [2]
