A southern ground hornbill at the Artis Zoo in Amsterdam has received a 3D-printed prosthesis replacing parts of both its upper and lower beak, Yahoo reported on October 16, 2026. The installation marks the first time a bird in the world has received a dual-beak 3D-printed replacement. [1]

The bird suffered an injury that damaged both sections of its beak. According to Yahoo, the Artis Zoo explained on social media that losing a beak severely impacts a bird's daily life, as it hindered the hornbill's ability to care for itself and gather food from the ground. [1]

To restore the bird's functional capabilities, the Artis Zoo carried out the prosthetic procedure in partnership with specialist partners, Yahoo reported. The 3D-printed design allows the hornbill to overcome its severe physical impairment and regain its independence. [1]
