Satellite communication could ensure that networks stay functional during natural disasters and improve access to essential services in remote areas by 2035, Devdiscourse reported. Speaking at a Viasat event on disaster management, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited Chairman and Managing Director Robert J Ravi explained that satellite systems enable faster emergency responses when standard infrastructure fails. [1]
Devdiscourse noted that Ravi illustrated the challenge with a scenario involving a nighttime cloudburst. In such events, rapidly rising water levels, submerged villages, and destroyed roads leave communities isolated, making satellite-based connectivity essential for emergency operations. [1]
Satellite constellations consist of groups of artificial satellites operating as a unified system, according to Wikipedia. Unlike individual satellites, these constellations can deliver permanent global coverage so that at least one satellite remains reachable from anywhere on Earth. [4]
Community communication resilience during major weather events has previously relied on alternative networks. As HEROIC BREAKING NEWS reported earlier, volunteer amateur radio operators in Florida maintained emergency communications across five counties after Hurricane Isaias to connect shelters with local management centers.
