The European Commission convened a cross-regional dialogue on October 14, 2026, to strengthen global disaster risk management through space technologies. European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations reported that Commissioners Lahbib and Kubilius led the event, titled From Space to Grassroots: Strengthening Community Resilience to Natural Hazards through Space Technologies. The initiative took place on the occasion of the International Day for Disaster Risk Management. [1][2]

Space services support all stages of the disaster management cycle, according to European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations. These technologies assist with preparedness and prevention using forecasts and early warnings. They also provide satellite mapping to support emergency response and post-disaster recovery assessments. [1][2]

Hadja Lahbib serves as the European Commissioner for Preparedness and Crisis Management. The Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations delivers overseas humanitarian aid and civil protection, aiming to save lives and alleviate suffering caused by natural disasters and human-made crises. [3][4][5]

The meeting marked the beginning of an ongoing international process to prepare for and respond to disasters using satellite technology.
