Volunteer editors are building specialized tools to detect and remove artificial intelligence generated text from Wikipedia, IEEE Spectrum reported. Ellia Lebleu, a founding member of WikiProject AI Cleanup, stated that the group formed in 2023 to address content that violates the guidelines of the encyclopedia. [1]

The volunteers initially identified machine writing through obvious clichés, according to IEEE Spectrum. The group is now adapting to harder to spot machine generated content as artificial intelligence writing improves. [1]

Wikipedia was founded in 2001 by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger as an open online encyclopedia. It is maintained by a community of volunteer editors and hosted by the nonprofit Wikimedia Foundation. [2]

The project members continue to debate the role of artificial intelligence while working to keep the reference work human written, IEEE Spectrum reported. The initiative focuses on maintaining reliability across the widely used reference site. [1][2]
