The United Nations Environment Programme recognized the Desa'a forest restoration project in Ethiopia as a World Restoration Flagship on October 29, 2026. Mongabay reported that the recognition was announced during the United Nations Biodiversity Conference, CBD COP17, in Yerevan, Armenia. The initiative works to restore degraded forests located in the Great Rift Valley. [1][2]
Doreen Lynn Robinson, deputy official at the agency, stated that the award aims to inspire others to take action and revive nature. The initiative has continued its work inside the Desa'a forest despite ongoing conflict in the region. [1]
As HEROIC BREAKING NEWS reported earlier, the United Nations previously allocated 8.5 million dollars from its Central Emergency Response Fund to support people affected by conflict across northern Ethiopia. That emergency relief targeted displaced populations in the Tigray, Amhara, Afar, and Benishangul-Gumuz regions. [4]
