Indigenous groups secure official decision making powers at global biodiversity summit
Indigenous peoples and local communities have solidified their role in global conservation governance after a dedicated advisory body gained full operational status at COP17 in Armenia.

Indigenous peoples and local communities have strengthened their role in global environmental decisions at the U.N. Biodiversity Conference in Armenia, known as COP17, Mongabay reported. The expansion of formal decision making powers follows the full operationalization of a dedicated subsidiary body within the Convention on Biological Diversity treaty. [1]
The Subsidiary body on Article 8(j), known as SB8J, was originally created at the 2024 biodiversity summit in Colombia, according to Mongabay. Under its operational status, the body allows Indigenous peoples and local communities to advise participating parties directly and draft decision texts for global policy. [1]
Community-based conservation movements originally emerged in the 1980s as a response to top down conservation practices imposed by governments and large organizations. The initiative aims to involve local inhabitants directly in conservation efforts that affect their territories while improving local livelihoods. [3]
The operationalization follows major international financial backing for local stewardship. As HEROIC BREAKING NEWS reported earlier, international funders delivered 2.35 billion dollars between 2021 and 2025 to support Indigenous peoples and local communities in securing land and forest rights, exceeding the initial 1.7 billion dollar pledge by 35 percent.
