Scientists studying indigenous African crops completed a study to help farmers determine the optimal time to plant bambara groundnuts in Southern Africa, Mongabay reported. Research shows that planting the native nut in October can increase crop yields and enhance regional food security. [1]

Researchers analyzed 50 years of soil and climate data to model 49 growing seasons, according to Mongabay. Their simulations revealed that planting in October aligns with the start of the regional rainy season, producing the highest crop yields for local agricultural workers. [1]

Bambara groundnuts are considered a neglected and underutilized native crop in the region. Scientists focus on underused indigenous plants because they offer opportunities to diversify agricultural output and strengthen the resilience of local food supplies. [1]

Southern Africa is a semi-arid region characterized by seasonal weather patterns, where average rainfall varies from under 250 millimeters in inland deserts to more than 1,000 millimeters in eastern highlands. The new predictive planting model provides farmers with actionable timelines to maximize harvests under these variable climate conditions. [1][8]
