Largest United States Wind Project Begins Powering Over One Million Homes
The SunZia wind farm in New Mexico has started operations, using over 900 turbines to supply clean energy across the American Southwest.

The SunZia wind farm in central New Mexico began generating electricity in June 2026, as reported by Grist. The facility is the largest wind energy project in North America. It uses more than 900 steel turbines, each as tall as the Statue of Liberty, to capture strong nightly wind gusts in the desert east of Albuquerque. [1]
Grist reported that the wind turbines are spread across a desert area roughly the size of Chicago. The electricity generated by the turbines feeds into a 550-mile transmission line stretched across the Southwest. The overall system currently supplies clean power to more than one million homes. [1]
The project reached completion after two decades of planning and construction. As HEROIC BREAKING NEWS reported earlier, isolated communities in Alaska and displaced youth in Cameroon are similarly expanding regional renewable energy infrastructure to build reliable local power systems. [1][2][3]
In short
- The SunZia project features over 900 wind turbines as tall as the Statue of Liberty.
- A 550-mile transmission line delivers wind power across the American Southwest.
- The wind farm provides clean electricity to more than one million homes.
