Madkam Sukki, a 20 year old tribal woman from Sukma district, received a prosthetic limb on Thursday at an event organised by the Dantewada district administration. ThePrint reported that the artificial leg will allow her to walk again following her recovery. [1]

According to ThePrint, Sukki lost her leg after stepping on a Maoist-planted pressure improvised explosive device on May 26, 2024. She was collecting mahua with a friend in Bheemapuram village when the device exploded. [1]

The insurgency began after the 1967 Naxalbari uprising, leading to a conflict between Maoist groups and the Indian government. The state of Chhattisgarh has seen ongoing violence, including an IED attack in Bijapur district in January 2025 that killed nine people. [2][3]

The support provided by the local district administration aims to assist victims of the regional conflict with rehabilitation and physical mobility. [1]
