A search dog successfully located a 70-year-old hiker in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on 19 October after he was missing for 24 hours, Wamiz.co.uk reported. Police were alerted to the disappearance of David Arai when he failed to return. Authorities discovered his rental car on the site, but there was no immediate sign of the missing hiker anywhere nearby. [1]
Emergency services initially deployed a helicopter to search the area from above, according to Wamiz.co.uk. When aerial efforts did not locate the man, responders called in search dog Trina and her handler, Officer Christopher Ross. Trina is a three-year-old Labrador Retriever who had previously proven herself by successfully tracking down missing individuals. [1]
Wamiz.co.uk reported that the search team conducted a relentless search that lasted for over seven hours. Trina eventually located Mr. Arai about two miles away from his rental vehicle. The hiker was found lying on his back in the undergrowth, positioned slightly off the trail. [1]
According to Wamiz.co.uk, when rescuers reached the location, Trina walked over to the hiker and gently licked his hand. The discovery brought a safe end to the intensive search effort conducted by emergency personnel in the national park. [1]
