Retired police dog Ace is running and playing again after receiving a custom prosthetic limb, iHeartDogs.com reported. The former Polk County Sheriff's Office K9 lost his left front leg and shoulder blade after being shot during an encounter with an armed suspect in August. NewsRadio WFLA, BIG 105.9, and 95.7 WDAE also reported that the retired K9 received a prosthetic leg. [1][2][3][4]
Ace received a donated artificial limb to help him remain active following his injury, according to iHeartDogs.com. Just three weeks after being fitted with the device, the dog began moving around without needing a walking harness for support. [1]
A prosthetic is an artificial device designed to replace a missing body part lost through trauma, disease, or medical conditions, and can restore lost physical functions. Ace's handler, Deputy Natalie Oestreich, has stayed beside him throughout his entire recovery process as he adapts to life with the artificial limb. [1][6]
