An off-duty Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department firefighter rescued three boaters on Saturday after their vessel capsized near Big Talbot Island, News4JAX reported. Firefighter Otto Scherick was walking along a beach trail to celebrate his girlfriend's birthday when he heard screaming coming from the water. [1]
News4JAX reported that Scherick sprinted to the shoreline and saw three young boaters waving for help while clinging to their overturned boat offshore. He immediately swam out to reach the stranded group. [1]
After sizing up the currents and environmental conditions, Scherick determined that the group needed to swim back to shore, according to News4JAX. Because the boaters had no life jackets on board, he disconnected the vessel's gas tank to use it as a flotation device. [1]
Big Talbot Island is a coastal barrier island state park situated 20 miles east of downtown Jacksonville along the Atlantic coastal plain. The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department provides fire protection and emergency medical services for Jacksonville and surrounding unincorporated areas of Duval County. [2][3]
