Indonesian authorities have paused a major agricultural expansion project, preserving roughly four million acres of rainforests, swamps, and peatlands, Good News Network reported. The decision to halt the clearance followed the country achieving self-sufficiency in rice cultivation three years earlier than planned. [1]
According to Good News Network, officials from the Agriculture Ministry and Forestry Ministry determined that there was no further need to clear forest areas for food production. The project was previously characterized as the largest deforestation initiative in the world. [1]
Forest clearance involves converting wooded areas into farms, ranches, or urban developments. Globally, forests cover roughly 31 percent of Earth's land surface, which represents a one-third decrease from levels prior to the historical expansion of agriculture. [2]
Although the ultimate long-term status of the preserved Indonesian lands remains to be determined, the agreement between the government ministries halts further clearing across the major islands for the foreseeable future, Good News Network reported. [1]
In short
- Indonesia paused a project that threatened four million acres of rainforests and peatlands.
- The country reached its rice self-sufficiency goals three years ahead of schedule.
- The decision was made jointly by Indonesia's agriculture and forestry authorities.
