Catholic nuns in remote regions of South America have stepped up to perform key religious duties typically reserved for male clergy, CS Monitor reported. In the late 1980s, Sister Terezinha Dalcegio was stationed in a remote parish within the Amazon rainforest in northern Brazil, where she led essential spiritual services for local communities. [1][4]

With permission from the local bishop, Sister Dalcegio and other nuns traveled long distances across rivers and through dense forests, CS Monitor said. They conducted marriages, handled baptisms, and administered Communion to serve remote populations that rarely had access to a resident priest. [1][4]

Due to the vast distances and shortage of ordained priests, formal pastoral visits by bishops occurred infrequently. CS Monitor reported that during one visit, a bishop apologized to community members because they were only able to celebrate Mass about once a year. [1][4]

Latin America is a cultural region in the Americas where Romance languages such as Spanish and Portuguese are predominantly spoken. Through their efforts, women religious in remote parts of Brazil and Peru continue to sustain community spiritual life where traditional church infrastructure is absent. [1][4][7]
