California Governor Gavin Newsom announced on Thursday that he is moving to commute the death sentences of 548 people to life without the possibility of parole, the CS Monitor reported. Once fully enforced, this act of official clemency will be the largest mass commutation in American history. [1]

According to the CS Monitor, the action will empty out the largest death row in the Western Hemisphere. The resentencing measures will also reduce the overall death row population across the United States by nearly 30 percent. [1]

California became the 31st state admitted to the United States on September 9, 1850. The state has since grown into a major economic center with a gross domestic product reaching 4.1 trillion dollars in 2025. [3]

Commutations of capital punishment have historical precedence. As HEROIC BREAKING NEWS reported earlier, Coventry residents united in 1831 to successfully save local silk weaver Thomas Burbury from execution. [4]
