The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is providing emergency food assistance to more than 400 people who evacuated the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky in Ukraine's Kherson region, UN News reported. Evacuees left the area during a brief local ceasefire. The European Sting also reported that the ceasefire in Oleshky offered hope for civilians. [1][2]
Many evacuees arrived at medical facilities in Kyiv on 31 October in worrying condition after enduring months of severe shortages of food, medical supplies, and basic necessities due to fighting, UN News reported. WFP partnered with Ukrainian humanitarian NGO Iskra Dobra to serve hot meals immediately upon arrival, with plans to continue support for an initial two weeks. [1]
Oleshky is situated in Kherson Oblast on the left bank of the Dnieper River in southern Ukraine. It has a population of 24,124 and is the administrative center of the Oleshky urban hromada. [4][6]
As HEROIC BREAKING NEWS reported earlier, officials had coordinated a humanitarian corridor to evacuate civilians from the city in an operation supported by international figures and human rights commissioners. UN News stated that more evacuees are expected to arrive in the coming days. [1][8]
