A group of volunteers is serving home cooked meals to unhoused community members and individuals experiencing food insecurity in Campbell River. Oak Bay News and the Campbell River Mirror reported that the volunteer initiative is led by Barb Lippke, a former support worker. [1][2]

According to Oak Bay News, Lippke has previously worked in emergency shelters, transitional housing, and supportive living housing. Four years sober herself, she stated that she draws on her personal experience growing up around people struggling with addiction to help create a non-judgmental space. [1]

Lippke noted that unhoused individuals face varied challenges and rejected the assumption that all unhoused residents struggle with addiction. Oak Bay News reported that many people in the community access the meal service primarily due to food insecurity. [1]
