Sampson has founded the Starborn Female Fighters Network, a free organization designed to connect female fighters across Newcastle and the Hunter Region, the Newcastle Herald reported. Sampson returned to the sport two years ago following severe mental health challenges and credits boxing with saving her life by giving her purpose. [1]
Sampson stated that she began boxing around the age of 10 and trained intermittently before returning to the ring, according to the Newcastle Herald. She aims to share her story to demonstrate to other young women experiencing difficulties that finding a sense of purpose is possible. [1]
Modern boxing operates under the Marquess of Queensberry rules established in 1867, which introduced the use of gloves, three-minute rounds, and a ten-second count for knockouts. Professional boxing features 17 weight classes regulated by major sanctioning bodies. [3]
As HEROIC BREAKING NEWS reported earlier, community initiatives using boxing to empower women have grown globally. A program in east London called Fight Forward uses funds raised from all-female fight nights to offer free boxing classes at an Aldgate gym for domestic abuse survivors. [4]
