Queens resident Joshua Service personally cleaned up an illegal waste dumping site located under a metro bridge in Crown Heights near Atlantic Avenue, according to Good News Network. Service decided to clean the area himself after people on social media challenged him to take action instead of just filming videos about the accumulated trash. [1]

Service had initially filmed the piles of garbage during a rail commute and called out the 311 non-emergency civil services line of New York City for failing to address the issue, Good News Network reported. Service told CBS News that viewers encouraged him to stop making videos and clear the trash on his own initiative. [1]

The New York City Department of Sanitation maintains the waste collection infrastructure and oversees refuse removal for a population of more than eight million people. The department collects roughly 11,000 tons of garbage, recycling, and compostable material every day across the city. [2]
