Pittsburgh Water has instituted a program that forgives outstanding water utility debt for eligible residents over a 24-month period, Good News Network reported. The initiative, known as the Arrearage Forgiveness Program, was recently updated and improved by the city water authority to support families struggling with utility bills. [1]

Under the guidelines of the initiative, participating customers must maintain their regular monthly payments. According to Good News Network, keeping up with these ongoing bills enables residents to have their pre-September outstanding balances gradually forgiven over the two-year timeframe. [1]

Good News Network reported that certain customers were automatically enrolled in the initiative starting in September. Approximately 4,300 households in the city living below 200 percent of the federal poverty level qualify for this assistance. [1]

The assistance program arrives during a broader ongoing affordability crisis in the United States. That national economic issue has been characterized by rising bills, persistent inflation, high interest rates, and stagnant wage growth. [1][4]
