The city of Hyderabad has launched a emergency eye trauma initiative to strengthen pre-hospital care ahead of the Diwali festival. The New Indian Express reported that the project aims to prevent lifelong loss of vision caused by firecracker-related injuries through rapid initial treatment. [1]

The collaborative initiative brings together the LV Prasad Eye Institute, EMRI Green Health Services, and Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital, according to The New Indian Express. Under the initiative, staff on 108 emergency ambulances will receive equipment to administer initial care for eye injuries and manage timely referrals to specialised facilities. [1]

Emergency medical services provide pre-hospital treatment, stabilisation, and transport to definitive care for serious injuries and illnesses. The initiative in Hyderabad involves key medical professionals, including Dr Poornima Tandra, a consultant cornea specialist at LV Prasad Eye Institute, and Dr GV Ramana Rao, director of Emergency Management Research Institute Green Health Services.
