The Hong Kong High Court on November 5, 2026, sentenced pro-democracy activist Joshua Wong to 10 years in prison on national security charges, according to Human Rights Watch, France 24, and Amnesty International. Amnesty International reported that the conviction was for colluding with foreign forces. Human Rights Watch noted that two months of the sentence will run concurrently with his current national security sentence. [1][2][3][4][5][6]

Wong has been held in custody since November 2020, Human Rights Watch reported. The organization noted that Wong was 24 years old when he was detained and now faces imprisonment until late 2036, when he will be 40 years old. Amnesty International stated that the latest conviction occurred mere months before he was due to be eligible for release from his previous sentence. [1][2]

Wong served as secretary-general of the pro-democracy political party Demosisto until it disbanded following the implementation of the Hong Kong national security law on June 30, 2020. He was previously the convenor and founder of the student activist group Scholarism and rose to international prominence during the 2014 Hong Kong protests for his pivotal role in the Umbrella Movement. [7]

Human Rights Watch described the national security charges against Wong as baseless, while Amnesty International called the legal proceedings against him a continuation of persecution by Hong Kong authorities. [1][2]
