The Houthi de facto authorities in Yemen have sent at least eight individuals involved in human rights and humanitarian work for criminal prosecution since August 18, 2026. Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International both report that the workers face espionage-related charges punishable by death. [1][2][8]
Amnesty International noted that two United Nations personnel are among those facing prosecution. The charges stem from the misuse of espionage allegations against civil society and humanitarian staff working within the country. [2]
Concurrently, Yemen's internationally recognized government launched a military offensive to retake territory held by Houthi forces. DW News and The Guardian reported that the offensive is supported by a Saudi-led coalition, with Euronews adding that the campaign includes 100 aircraft. Coalition forces have recaptured key areas near the Bab al-Mandab strait, including the town of Dhubab. [3][4][5][7]
