South African jurist Navi Pillay was announced as the winner of the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday. UN News and the BBC reported that the Norwegian Nobel Committee recognized her work promoting peace and international law. CNBC and Le Monde also covered the announcement, noting her long career in international justice. [1][3][5][6]

The Norwegian Nobel Committee stated that Pillay was recognized for exceptional courage and integrity in advancing a global legal order. UN News reported that the committee highlighted her key role in ensuring that war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide face prosecution. [1]

Pillay served as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights from September 2008 through August 2014. Her career spans more than 50 years, beginning with fighting apartheid in South Africa and expanding to defending civilians in conflict zones. She was the first non-white female judge of the High Court of South Africa and has also served as a judge of the International Criminal Court and President of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. [1][10]

The Nobel Peace Prize is one of the original five Nobel Prizes established by Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel. Before the official announcement, Sudan's Emergency Response Rooms had been considered slim favorites for the award, according to Kalshi News. [2][8]
