A County Down resident who re-learned how to walk following a serious spinal illness has collected more than 1,000 bins of rubbish in under a year, Belfast Live reported. Tom McGrory, who lives in Annahilt, has become a regular volunteer on local roads to combat roadside littering. [1]
Belfast Live reported that McGrory previously required assistance to get out of a hospital bed before recovering his mobility. He now walks along roadways wearing high-visibility clothing to clean up items dropped by passing drivers. [1]
McGrory told Belfast Live that motorists are responsible for an absolute disgrace of a litter problem. He stated that he frequently collects energy drink cans, coffee cups, vapes, and fast food boxes thrown directly out of car windows. [1]
County Down is one of six traditional counties in Northern Ireland, covering an area of 2,490 square kilometres with a population of 552,261 residents. [2]
