Champion jockey Blake Shinn returned to competitive racing nine months after sustaining a severe leg fracture during Melbourne Cup Day last year. The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age both reported that Shinn suffered a fall from the mare She's Got Pizzazz, snapping the tibia and fibula in his left leg in four places. [1][2]
Immediately following the fall, Shinn hyperventilated on the track before emergency medical staff loaded him into an ambulance for surgery. The Sydney Morning Herald reported that Shinn underwent intensive rehabilitation following the injury to return to competition. [1]
Shinn defied medical odds by returning to racing on August 1, winning his first race back aboard Nearco Frod. The Sydney Morning Herald noted that the victory came after he secured the 2024 and 2025 Victorian jockeys premiership prior to his recovery. [1]
