Two Australian Patients Receive New Under Skin Prosthetic Arm Implant

Two patients in Australia have received a novel under-skin implant that measures muscle signals to improve control over prosthetic arms.

Two patients in Melbourne, Australia, recently became the first recipients of a new type of implant designed to control prosthetic arms, AOL.com reported. The device is produced by the company Phantom Neuro and is implanted underneath the skin. [1]

According to AOL.com, the 2-by-10-centimeter implant wraps around the forearm below the skin. In that location, the device measures electrical activity within muscles through a process known as electromyography. [1]

Trend Hunter and IEEE Spectrum also reported on the testing of the wireless muscle-sensing prosthetic controller. A prosthesis is an artificial device implanted or attached to replace a missing body part lost through trauma, disease, or congenital conditions. [2][3][4]

As HEROIC BREAKING NEWS reported earlier, researchers have also explored alternative control methods for prosthetics, including acoustic sensors that process muscle activity signals in real time to accurately execute hand gestures. [5]
