The Philippines and Vietnam have agreed to launch Project Typhoon Mitigation, a joint initiative to improve their capacity for emergency response, disaster preparedness, and post-disaster recovery. The Daily Tribune reported that Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. of the Philippines and General Phan Van Giang, Vietnam's Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister, established the partnership during a meeting. [1]
Both defense leaders agreed to pursue the initiative on the sidelines of the ASEAN Defense Ministers' Meeting and ADMM-Plus. The talks took place under the 2026 ASEAN chairship of the Philippines. According to the Daily Tribune, both officials highlighted the shared vulnerability of their countries to severe weather events. [1]
Both nations face regular threats from destructive storms in the region. Super Typhoon Egay, known internationally as Typhoon Doksuri, caused severe impacts across the Philippines and Vietnam in July 2023. Additionally, Super Typhoon Rolly, known as Typhoon Goni, hit the Philippines as an extremely powerful storm in October 2020. [6][7]
The agreement builds on broader regional efforts to improve response capabilities. As HEROIC BREAKING NEWS reported earlier, military forces from Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia held a joint disaster relief drill on October 9 to enhance search and rescue operations across Southeast Asia. [10]
