A cardiac surgery team at Meduni Vienna has developed a new surgical technique to address a major challenge in aortic valve replacement, Newswise reported. The procedure was created at the Department of Cardiac Surgery to improve outcomes for patients receiving prosthetic valves. [1]

When replacing an aortic valve, a small aortic root can restrict the size of the implanted prosthetic valve, according to Newswise. If an implanted valve is too small for a patient's body size, the heart must work against increased resistance, a complication known as patient-prosthesis mismatch that leads to poorer clinical outcomes. [1]

The aortic valve is located between the left ventricle and the aorta. It serves as the final heart structure that blood travels through before circulating through the rest of the body. [4]

The newly developed approach allows surgeons to overcome the size constraints of a small aortic root, as Newswise reported. By enabling the placement of appropriately sized prostheses, the technique aims to prevent mismatched valve sizing and reduce strain on the heart. [1]
