Pat Garcia-Gonzalez, co-founder and chief executive officer of The Max Foundation, spoke at the LeukO 2026 Global Virtual Congress on Leukemias on Saturday. Oncodaily reported that Garcia-Gonzalez detailed how a family loss led to a global effort expanding access to chronic myeloid leukemia treatment. [1]

Chronic myeloid leukemia has become a treatable chronic disease for many patients through modern care. According to Oncodaily, essential medicines and monitoring still remain unavailable to thousands of people worldwide. [1]

First-line therapy for most chronic myelogenous leukemia patients uses tyrosine-kinase inhibitors. More than 90 percent of cases are caused by a chromosomal abnormality known as the Philadelphia chromosome, which was discovered by Peter Nowell in 1960 and produces a constitutively active tyrosine kinase. [2]

Over 25 years of operation, The Max Foundation has helped more than 90,000 patients obtain treatment. Oncodaily reported that the foundation is also expanding opportunities for molecular monitoring and treatment-free remission. [1]
